More than 4,600 Lao nationals studied abroad in 2024, funded by government and exchange scholarships, or personal means and support from the state and private sectors. According to a report presented by the Ministry of Education and Sports at its annual general meeting, a total of 4,653 people studied in schools, universities and other educational institutions in at least 23 countries in 2024. Of the total number, 674 of them pursued studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
According to the Student Affairs Department of the Ministry of Education and Sports, every year, 3,000 to 4,000 Lao nationals enrol in overseas educational programs.
Several countries now offer scholarships to study at their universities and other tertiary institutions, with courses on offer at the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level, as well as other higher educational programs.
